Aneho is a city in Togo and the capital of the Lakes Prefecture within the Maritime Region. A spiritual center of the Guin-Mina people, it sits in southeastern Togo, 50 kilometers from Lomé. The city of Aneho borders Benin and stands as a significant historical site linked to the slave trade.

History

The ancient city, built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, was founded by Guin immigrants. The native inhabitants of Aneho are the Guin and Mina peoples. The Guin people are led by the Kingdom of Foli Bebe, based in Glidji. The Mina people are led by the Kingdom of Ata-Quaum, based in Nlessi. The Guin of Aneho have been led since 2002 by Togbé Ahuawoto Zankli Savado Lawson VIII. The city has been on UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list since December 12, 2000.
