Introduced to Togo in the 18th century by Berbers and Tuaregs who crossed the entire Sahara to reach West Africa, Islam is the third religion of Togo. Practiced by 15% of the Togolese population, it commands unwavering devotion to the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

Mosques stand throughout the country, and each day muezzins call the faithful to prayer. Muslims in Togo celebrate, like their counterparts worldwide, the major Islamic festivals: Mawlid (the birth of the Prophet), Ramadan, and Tabaski.

The cities with the strongest Muslim populations are located in Togo's northern regions: Sokodé, Kara, and Dapong. A significant Muslim presence is also found in the Togolese capital, Lomé.
