Atakpamé is the capital of the Plateaux Region. Covering an area of 16,975 km², the Plateaux region is home to a population of 1,425,199 inhabitants. Mountains and lush vegetation create a mild and restful climate. It is in this region that Mont Agou, the highest peak in the sub-region at 986m, is located.

The region is subdivided into 9 prefectures: Haho, Kloto, Wawa, Ogou, Amou, Agou, East-Mono, Middle-Mono, Danyi
