Kara
Kara, a major city in northern Togo: gateway to Koutammakou, homeland of the Evala wrestling tradition and Kabyè country. Our complete guide to planning your trip.
Kara is the capital of the Kara region. The city sits approximately 400 km north of Lomé, in the heart of Kabyè country, near the locality of Pya, birthplace of former president Gnassingbé Eyadéma.
History
Kara originally developed as an extension of the old village of Lama, near the bridge crossing the Kara River. Its initial name, a colonial legacy, was Lama-Kara.
Culture
Historically known as Tamberma country, this region, inhabited by the Batamaribi people, officially bears the name Koutammakou since its inscription in 2004 on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is a highly coveted destination in Togo. Visiting this country without exploring it would be a missed opportunity.
Cultural Events
Each year, the Kara region hosts the Evala, a traditional wrestling competition. This widely publicized practice forms part of the initiation ritual for young Kabyè men, marking their passage into adulthood.
