Kpimé Waterfalls

🧭 Off the beaten pathNature & Landscapes

Two successive cascades in the heart of dense tropical rainforest, just kilometers from Kpalimé. A refreshing natural site ideal for hiking and swimming in the Plateaux region.

Kpimé Waterfalls lie in the Plateaux region, several kilometers from Kpalimé, in western Togo. Two main cascades tumble from the forested heights of the Akwapim-Togo massif, fed by a watercourse that cuts through dense forest. The site draws hikers and nature lovers for the refreshing pools and tropical vegetation that surrounds it.

Quick Facts

  • Access: from Kpalimé, road then track toward Kpimé-Séva; a local guide is recommended to reach the waterfalls.
  • Entrance: paid entrance fee collected on-site (rate to be confirmed locally).
  • Suggested duration: 2 to 3 hours for the round trip and swimming.
  • Gear: hiking boots or non-slip sandals highly recommended; the trail can be slippery.
  • Best time: rainy season (April–October) for maximum flow; dry season for a more walkable trail.

What You'll See

Two cascades succeed one another along the same watercourse. The first, more accessible, forms a natural pool where swimming is possible. The second, higher cascade, requires a few more minutes of walking on a sloped trail. The riparian forest lining the route shelters dense vegetation: tree ferns, palms, and vines frame the path.

History and Context

The Kpalimé region and its surroundings form one of Togo's greenest zones, heir to forest cover preserved thanks to rugged terrain. Kpimé Waterfalls have been known to local residents for generations and today rank among the most visited natural sites in the Plateaux region, often combined with other hikes around Kpalimé.

Highlights of Your Visit

The First Waterfall and Its Pool

The basin at the foot of the first cascade offers cool, relatively calm water. Swimming is enjoyed by both local and international visitors. The dense vegetation intensifies the sense of seclusion.

The Ascent to the Second Waterfall

The trail leading to the second cascade winds through a wilder stretch of forest. The view of the waterfall from below, framed by vegetation, constitutes the site's prime photo opportunity.

The Surrounding Forest

The round-trip route hugs a humid forest ecosystem. Birds, butterflies, and tropical insects enliven the walk, particularly in the morning.

Photography Tips

Light filtered through the canopy is most favorable mid-morning, before the sun climbs too high. Position yourself at the base of the waterfalls to capture the water's movement with slightly extended exposure time. A polarizing filter reduces glare on wet rocks. Protect your gear from ambient humidity.

Location and Access

The waterfalls sit in the village of Kpimé-Séva, about ten kilometers northeast of Kpalimé. From Kpalimé, motorcycle taxis (zémidjans) or rental vehicles reach the trailhead. The final track can be difficult during the rainy season. A local guide, available on-site or in Kpalimé, aids navigation and enriches the experience.
