Vaccinations

1. Mandatory vaccinations: only the yellow fever vaccine is mandatory. It is as important as your visa. Once vaccinated in your home country, your healthcare provider will issue you with a yellow certificate that you will be asked to present at the airport. It is essential to carry this certificate with you during your trip. It is the only valid proof that you are vaccinated in accordance with the law. If you don't receive it in your country of departure, medical staff at the airport in Cotonou are available to administer the vaccine before you exit the airport.
2. Optional vaccinations and treatments:
   • Typhoid fever: doctors recommend typhoid vaccination, though it is not mandatory. It's important to note that this vaccine only protects against certain forms of typhoid and is not a guarantee. Therefore, it is essential to be careful about your hygiene and food choices.
   • Hepatitis A: strongly recommended to protect against this liver infection, which is transmitted through contaminated food and water. There is a combined vaccine for typhoid and hepatitis A.
   • Hepatitis B: recommended, especially in cases of sexual contact or blood exposure with an infected person
   • Meningitis
   • Malaria treatment: transmitted through mosquito bites, many doctors strongly recommend various malaria treatments. It is important to research the potential side effects of these treatments, as they often cause other health issues. Depending on when you travel and the length of your stay, it may be wise to simply protect yourself with an insecticide-treated mosquito net and mosquito repellents.
